I was in the middle of a process of change at home. What used to be my studio / baby’s room (which I had already painted in the past with some small illustrations) now had to become the room of a 2 year old boy, and I knew I wanted to decorate one of his walls with a mural. I also knew it would be a line from a song.
The quote “I’ll kill monsters for you” (“Yo mataré monstruos”) por ti from the song “Un día en el parque”(“A day in the park”) from Love of Lesbian echoed in my head. I think it is the concept and the melody that comes closest to my feeling since I became a mother.
The process:
For the first time, I worked on paper in larger formats than usual:
First black and white results:
I worked on different compositional styles and colour palettes:
And I finally opted for the latter.
Color palette:
I thought of a sober and friendly palette. Harnessing larger child friendly elements, so that they would form large masses of colour that would simplify the illustration and could decorate without being too dramatic at first sight: clouds, mountains, moons…
And to these large masses I added some decorative details such as flowers, lines or drops.
Used materials:
- Acrylic painting (Vallejo)
- brushes
- Acrylic pens (POSCA)
Here you can see the process of the mural:
And the final result of the room. My son loved it. And of course I won’t be moving out of that house for at least the next 3 years 😉
